Port Arthur Tax Office Closes Temporarily

The Port Arthur Tax Office closed June 2 and will remain shut until August 29 due to staffing shortages. Jefferson County officials and residents have voiced frustration, calling the move a major inconvenience. Tony’s BBQ Faces Tough Times Amid I-10 Construction

Tony’s BBQ on Calder Avenue is seeing a 30% drop in business as nearby I-10 construction limits customer access and increases traffic delays. Owner Jose Rendon says loyal customers still visit, but many avoid the area due to long detours and bridge demolition. Rendon hopes to weather the storm, but closure remains a possibility if business doesn't rebound soon. Read more here!

Port Arthur Violent Crime Drops 11% in 2024, Police Say

Violent crime in Port Arthur fell by 11% from 2023 to 2024, with major drops in auto theft and sexual assault, according to FBI data. Police Chief Timothy Duriso credits new patrol units, overtime support, and stronger community engagement for the improvement. The department plans to boost surveillance citywide with cameras and license plate readers to further crime reduction efforts. Read more here!

Freddy’s Coming to Beaumont

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers has confirmed it will open a new location in Beaumont at 4490 Crow Road near Parkdale Mall, with construction already underway and a grand opening expected by mid-November. The popular chain replaces the former Steak 'n Shake site and will offer steakburgers, fries, hot dogs, and custard-based desserts like sundaes and concretes. Read more here!

Texas Replaces Paper Tags with Metal Plates Starting July 1

Starting July 1, Texas will replace paper tags with permanent metal plates given at purchase. The change aims to stop tag fraud and improve tracking. Buyers can legally drive right away, even without the registration sticker. Read more here!

Beach Advisory for McFaddin Wildlife Refuge

Elevated Enterococcus bacteria levels were found in water samples taken June 10 at McFaddin Refuge beaches. Authorities warn that levels above 104 colonies are unsafe for swimming. Testing will continue, and updates will be issued as needed. Read more here!
